
Parkinson Disease: Evidence-based Treatment Strategies for People: Early Stage

This case-based course is designed to introduce evidence-based treatment strategies for people with early stage Parkinson Disease. Treatment strategies will include gait training, aerobic training and strategies to increase self efficacy, community engagement, and long term exercise adherence. Participants will view videos of a patient with Parkinson’s disease, complete activities to stimulate clinical decision making, and apply evidenced based treatment principles.
Learning Objectives:
1. Select evidence-based, patient-specific treatment strategies for a patient with early PD
2. Identify impairments in early PD
3. Implement successful strategies for gait training in people with early PD
4. Formulate strategies for engaging people with PD in lifelong exercise
5. Create an appropriately dosed aerobic program for someone with early PD
6. Appraise and promote appropriate community exercise resources

Nick Wendel
PT, DPT
Nick Wendel is a board certified neurologic physical therapy specialist with a doctorate in physical therapy from Boston University. He has completed a neurologic physical therapy residency through Boston University and has worked in the acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient settings focusing on individuals with neurologic dysfunction. He is a clinical research physical therapist at Boston University and enjoys working with patients with Parkinson Disease both clinically and in the research setting. Nick has also worked as a teaching assistant at Boston University in their neurologic curriculum since 2016 and has served as treasurer for the APTA of MA Neuro SIG from 2018-2019.

Sara Crandall
PT, DPT
Sara Crandall is a physical therapist on the neurology team at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital’s Outpatient Center in Medford, MA. She has worked at Spaulding since 2014 and treats a variety of neurological diagnoses. She also leads an adaptive running group (Spaulding Runners in Training), adaptive dance for Parkinson's group, and a general exercise group for people with Parkinson Disease. Crandall received a Bachelor of Science in exercise studies from Boston University in 2010, and her doctorate in physical therapy from Boston University in 2012. She completed the Boston University Neurological Physical Therapy residency from 2012-2013 and went on to become certified as a neurologic clinical specialist in 2014. She has been a clinical mentor in Boston University's neurologic physical therapy residency since 2016. Sara is currently the nominating committee chair of the ANPT Degenerative Disease’s SIG and works on their podcast “4D: Deep Dive Into Degenerative Diseases.”

Katy McGraw
PT, DPT
Katy McGraw is a board certified neurologic physical therapy specialist since 2013. She graduated with a doctorate in physical therapy from University of Illinois at Chicago in 2009 and completed the Boston University Neurological Physical Therapy residency from 2011-2012. She currently works as a neurologic PT at Northwestern Hospital's Lake Forest Hospital outpatient clinic in Lake Forest, IL. Prior to this, she spent several years working as a Clinical Research PT at the Center for Neurologic Rehabilitation at Boston University where she provided clinical outpatient services, participated in research, and supported various educational programs for persons with PD and related movement disorders. She also served as the Coordinator of the American Parkinson Disease Association's National Rehabilitation Resource Center at Boston University providing resources on exercise and rehabilitation to persons with Parkinson disease. She is active within the ANPT, serving on the Degenerative Disease SIG as Chair and the Nominating Committee, and remains involved on their podcast “4D: Deep Dive Into Degenerative Diseases.”
